Special Events for 2009April 4 “Grafting for the Future” Seminar. Come learn how to graft an apple tree. Lee Calhoun, author of "Old Southern Apples", will conduct the class. At the end of the day, all participants will take home with them a tree grafted from one of the orchard’s 400 varieties . Fee charged: $40. Pre-registration required: 336-325-2298. Class size limited to 20 participants. Meet at the Southern Heritage Apple Orchard at Horne Creek Farm. 9 a.m.-1 p.m. May 9 Heritage Day Celebration. Demonstrations of rural agricultural and domestic skills which were common during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Butter making, sheep shearing, natural dyeing, wood working, children’s games, cooking, gardening, storytelling, crosscut sawing, beekeeping, music, and much more! Fee charged for food, drinks, and some craft activities. For information, call 336-325-2298. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. June 20 Ice Cream Social. Help the site’s staff and volunteers make some “melt-in-your-mouth” ice cream using a hand-cranked ice cream freezer. Then, sit back and enjoy some great old-time music. Fee charged for food, drinks, and ice cream. For information, call 336-325-2298. 11 a.m.-3 p.m. October 17 Cornshucking Frolic. A traditional rural frolic featuring the harvesting, shucking, shelling, and grinding of corn. Cider making, quilting, cooking, woodworking, wagon rides, and traditional music featured. Numerous craft demonstrations also featured. Wonderful products and gifts available at our Country Store. $3 donation requested for admission. Experience the warmth of a rural turn-of-the-century Christmas. Music and food of the era will be featured. Reservations necessary for this one hour program.
