The Dining Room

The elegant state Dining Room has a blue color scheme accented by bright colors in the carpet, folding screens, and flower arrangements. The room has a gracious atmosphere for elegant receptions, meals, and meetings. The wall panel covering and draperies are silk and were installed in 1990. The San Domingo mahogany banquet table can seat up to 24 people. The needlepoint seats were hand stitched in a Florentine flame motif by 30 women from across North Carolina. The room is lit by an Austrian crystal and gilt chandelier of hand-cut prisms in varying designs and hues. In the china cabinet is the official state china, a Lenox dinner service with a gold edge border and the state seal. Pieces of the state silver, all engraved with the state seal, long-leaf pine, dogwood, and North Carolina monogram, sit on the ca. 1820 mahogany sideboard. Three silver trays feature engravings of the mansion, the State Capitol, and the Old Well on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus. The north side hall outside of the Dining Room features portraits of 25 first ladies who have lived in the mansion.
